Australia and the Restored Church

The Early History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia

The early history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia is largely unknown to Church members, even to most Australian members. Yet this history is fascinating, and the contribution of the early members to the Church has been enormous-both in Australia and in America.

This book describes the conditions that existed when the first missionaries arrived and provides an overview of some of the converts and their sacrifices as the Church was being established. It also describes the difficulties and loss of life that occurred as the Saints were crossing the Pacific Ocean on their way to Zion, and the challenges posed by missionaries of the so-called Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but which eventually led to one third of Joseph and Emma Smith’s descendants living in Australia.

Although this book is mainly about the early history of the Saints, it does not overlook the progress of the Church and the devotion of its members in more recent times. But times have changed, and because of the many prophecies regarding a coming apostasy, I also touch on this subject.

Physical and spiritual wealth

★★★★★
The context you provided about the gold rushes, both in NSW, Victoria, California and later, WA, provided a lens through which to see that the pursuit of wealth seems to move even more people than does the pursuit of truth. And wouldn’t we like to have attended a tent meeting of the Gold Diggers Branch? Also didn’t know the RLDS story in Australia...

So much learned

★★★★★
There is so much there that I did not know about the earliest years of the Church in Australia. I appreciate the way you contextualized the arrivals/conversions/departures of the early Latter-day Saints within a half century of Australia’s first colonization. I was quite unaware of the stories of those who came as converts and even missionaries from Great Britain and Ireland and then the, shall we say, early hit-and-miss efforts from Church headquarters to share the gospel in Oz.

Joseph's Aussie ancestors

★★★★★
I had heard that many descendants of Joseph Smith lived in Australia, but before reading your book I did not understand how that came to be.

Legacy

★★★★★
I was familiar with the story of the second voyage of the Julia Ann but was wholly unaware of the extent of Latter-day Saint emigration from Australia to “Zion” in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Looking back, as one who came much later in search of a harvest, the departures of those earliest saints tear at my heart when I think how they might have blessed their homeland had they remained.
